Resolution of the CMKOS Council on the Ratification Process of Lisbon Treaty in the Czech Republic

CMKOS: We do not want to be second rate citizens of the EU

  • The CMKOS considers the present developments in the Czech Republic concerning the final stages of ratification of the Lisbon Treaty to be provoked artificially and on purpose.
  • Artificially - because the reason was to circumvent the decision of the Parliament of the Czech Republic that already adopted the Lisbon Treaty, and on purpose - so that the citizens of our country - and it is usually not mentioned - could not protest against possible violations of their social, labour and other human rights contained in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union at the EU bodies.
  • The CMKOS therefore rejects the pressure of the President of the Czech Republic Mr Václav Klaus on Czech Republic's opt out of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
  • The CMKOS sees in this a step openly aimed against civil and employees' rights contained in the Charter. In the framework of the EU the Czech citizens' rights and their enforcing would be weakened. The CMKOS rejects that the citizens of the Czech Republic would become second rate citizens in the EU.
  • The intentional provoking of feelings of fear of the EU is not a trustworthy, responsible and beneficial programme for our society.
  • The CMKOS is not against negotiation of further additional guarantees of the principle of prohibition of retroactivity, however not at a price of opting out of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Therefore the CMKOS is for the soonest possible finalisation of the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty in our country.
